geekSPARK

geekSPARK (formerly cyberSPARK) is a showcase for the creative use of new and interactive media and technology in the local community.  Whether in the form of a large video game studio, or a solitary multidisciplinary genius, The Triangle is filled with people blending art with technology, creative ideas with technical know-how. Our goal is to bring more of these people together, and to provide a venue to promote their emerging work.

Fab Lab:

Fab Labs Carolinas is a non-profit community outreach program supported by the MIT and the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation (among other donors and sponsors) to bring the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship to underserved and interested members of the community.

We are pleased to be hosting MIT’s mobile fablab at SPARKcon this year. The mobile fab lab is a trailer filled with cutting edge computer controlled fabrication and electronics equipment that embodies a basic fab lab. It will be in City Plaza where visitors will have the opportunity to learn how to use the equipment to create objects using wood, and other materials.

Fab Labs Carolinas believes that the concentration of technical skills and the right entrepreneurial culture can transform economically depressed regions into a local center for new industry. In addition, the fab labs have also been used to increase the quality of life through technology. For example, father-child “build” days have been organized at fab labs.

In the Carolinas, the immediate goal is to build a permanent fablab in Durham.

SPARKwars

SPARKwars is a weekend-long melee game of Assassins that runs Friday, Sept 16 at 4:00pm to Sunday, Sept 18 at 7:00pm. All of the action takes place at SPARKcon, so there are no restrictions on where you live to be eligible to compete. Everyone can play, and best of all, it’s FREE!

There will be various checkpoints scattered throughout SPARKcon. Players will be notified via text message when a new checkpoint is available and must find it and text the special code word displayed at the checkpoint before the checkpoint expires. Miss a checkpoint, and you’re out! Keep an eye out as you roll up to a new checkpoint, because chances are good you won’t be alone…

At 7:00pm on Sunday, the living assassin with the most kills will be awarded a brand new water gun and a $150 cash prize. Sign up today and tell your friends to sign up for SPARKwars!

For those of you new to Assassins, the game is simple: eliminate your opponents by hitting them with your water weapon of choice. See the Rules for more info on allowable weapons. SPARKwars is a melee game, so all Player Dossiers are viewable from the start of the game. When you kill a target, be sure to get his or her kill code and username. Return to the SPARKwars site and type in their kill code to eliminate them and write up an amazing obituary detailing how you sent them to a watery grave. Don’t forget about the checkpoints; miss one and you’re out!

SPARKvision Portals:

To create more personal connections within the sprawling footprint of SPARKcon 2011, geekSPARK will be hosting two telepresence stations featuring Cisco’s Umi product, which will provide live video communication between locations around the main SPARKcon areas.

SPARKcon attendees can view a live feed from the other Umi system. Attendees will be able to communicate with each other from system to system. This will allow users to experience what is happening in the other SPARKcon event areas, thus bringing together the major city districts and encouraging attendees to travel from area to area.

Come Play!
